The document was carbon copied to Holloman, but if there was a reply from Mrs. **WD:** The letter is located in the papers of Fire and Police Director Frank Holloman. **AC:** Do we know if Coretta Scott King responded to this letter? I assume the copy you have in the archives is from the city’s collection? However, he was so impressed with the spirit of the Memphis movement he committed to leading a march, because he realized Memphis was the Poor People’s Campaign in microcosm. King to give a speech and then move on with the planning of the Poor People’s Campaign (which was carried out in the wake of his assassination). King came to lend his support to the sanitation strikers, not to negotiate on their behalf, so he and Mayor Loeb never met. What happened then? Did Loeb meet with him? Mayor Loeb was, as you said, intransigent on every issue, so sanitation workers went on strike, and King was asked to come to Memphis and lend his support. The city had a long history of discrimination against black workers - they had little job security, struggled with safety, and didn’t receive equal pay and benefits - and opposed their union. At the same time, 22 black sewer workers were sent home without pay, while their white counterparts were compensated. The weather triggered a trash truck’s compactor mechanism, crushing Echol Cole and Robert Walker, two black sanitation workers. On February 1, 1968, a rainstorm pounded the city and set off two very different incidents. **AC:** Let’s back up and explain why Martin Luther King Jr. It’s taken a long time for us to come to grips with the fact that Memphis created the conditions leading to Dr. At the same time, an inferiority complex seeped into the city’s bones and is only now dissipating. King’s murder would be blamed for every civic failure. **WD:** That unfortunately was a very common view. Did most white Memphians feel as though they were victims of the assassination, too? Now, the mayor was a racist who had described court-ordered integration as “anarchy,” and Tennessee was, until the end of the Civil War, a slave state. Loeb goes on to imply that the assassination was probably inevitable. He seems to be saying that Memphis was the real victim in the assassination of MLK, a sentiment I’ve definitely heard in Memphis. **AC:** Mayor Henry Loeb is at the top of my list of worst Memphians, and that quote always turns my stomach. Hamilton’s words were certainly more kindly than those of Mayor Henry Loeb, who stated, “We wish the incident had happened elsewhere - if it had to happen.” On the one hand, Hamilton’s letter seems effusive and heartfelt, but it no doubt was also designed to quell any additional criticism over the billing error. Memphis citizens and their leaders were shaken by the condemnations leveled at them and did not want to contribute to that environment. Is Hamilton asking her to keep the mistake quiet in the last sentence? **AC:** When she got a bill, standard policy or not, it must’ve been a bitter insult, but to the City of Memphis, it had the potential to be a national embarrassment at a time when they already looked pretty terrible. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was treated for his wounds and unfortunately died from them. King was shot, he was transported by ambulance to St. Hamilton is referring to a document generated when a citizen was transported to the hospital by a city ambulance. **Wayne Dowdy:** It was a pleasure working with you, and I appreciate you letting me share with you our collection. I was focused on the 1890s, but you got my sensibilities early on and would often tempt me with other archival treasures, including this letter, which I’ve thought about a lot over the last few years. **Alexis Coe:** Wayne, we met a few years ago in your archive, where I was researching what would become my first book, Alice+Freda Forever. It is a cross-browser and cross-platform charting solution intended for everybody who deals with creation of dashboard, reporting, analytics, statistical, financial or any other data visualization solutions. The first 3 lines create the query string while the final line performs the query.An圜hart is a flexible JavaScript (HTML5) based charting solution which will fit any need for data visualization. You should replace this with the appropriate query for your needs. Below, we do a simple query that fetches all the fields and all the values from an example table. For those of you new to using SQL, a query is effectively an enquiry to a database that returns the requested data. Once our connection is made, we can perform a query. $connection = mysql_select_db($database, $server) 4. $server = mysql_connect($host, $username, $password) The first line creates the connection to the server while the second line connects us to the correct database. In the third step, we will connect to our database using the previously defined variables. $database="local_db" // use your database name 3. $host = "localhost" // use your host name or address $password = "password" // use your password $username = "anychart_user" // use your username Note that if you have set up a local database, the host name is “localhost” and often the default username is “root”. Please replace these strings with the necessary information for your own database. In the code below we have added dummy information for the purpose of showing you how this is done. We need the username, password, host, and database name. Next, we declare our MySQL database variables required to access our database. All code written within these tags are read by the server as PHP. This can be done by using the following opening and closing tags. The first step is to create a PHP script. The second step simply draws the chart in the same way you’ve been used to. First, we will use PHP to access our MySQL database before querying the table and appending the result into a JSON object. Our process can be broken down into two clearly defined steps. We will describe the steps involved and reveal that it is in fact not challenging at all, just different! In this tutorial, we will be covering how to query a MySQL database using PHP. Today we will focus on using PHP to handle this task for us when our data is stored in MySQL. There are many workarounds for this problem including approaches involving PHP, Ajax, Node.js, and many more. Unfortunately, it is not possible to use JavaScript to query a database because JavaScript is a client side solution and querying a database requires a server side approach due to security concerns - you just can’t store database login and password in your JavaScript code. But what about importing the data from an SQL database? This is an easily done but often misunderstood approach to handling and loading data for data visualizations. There is a lot of coverage in the documentation of using a data object declared within the code as well as importing your data from a file using An圜hart’s data loader. It is this final issue which we will be addressing today. The data may differ in many ways including the number of features in the dataset, what type these features may be, the format of the data, and how the data is stored. I think this is largely a result of the fact that while the ways we output the data are quite similar, the input data is commonly very different. When using a charting library like An圜hart, which makes visualizing data so quick and easy, often the most challenging step for beginners is loading data. 12/19/2023 0 Comments Www anydesk com for macHowever, DRE might not be the best fit for your company if you’re only looking for a basic remote access solution. This makes it ideal for even small organizations. To help you keep track of communications between you and your users, messages are saved automatically to safe and searchable session logs, similar to AnyDesk.ĭRE is an easy-to-use AnyDesk alternative that, like AnyDesk, is designed to scale with your company as it grows. Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,īut bears it out even to the edge of doom. Though rosy lips and cheeks within his bending sickle’s compass come Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken. That looks on tempests and is never shaken Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, Furthermore, she has a half-brother, called Ocean Whitaker, from Forest Whitaker’s previous relationship. Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. Alike Autumn, her half-sibling, Sonnet Whitaker, also pursued her musical career while her younger half-sibling, True Whitaker, is studying to become a successful screenwriter and an actor. By one of the great romantics of history with an instantly identifiable verse, this classic piece of writing makes a beautiful and elegant choice for a wedding ceremony. Keats progresses through the stages of the season, from ripening fruits to increasingly cold nights, displaying an appreciation for every moment. And there's a reason why Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare is one of the most popular ceremony reading of all time. 'To Autumn' by John Keats Romantic poet John Keats waxes poetic, literally, about the scenery of the fall season in this famous poem. Quite lovely. There's a reason why the work of William Shakespeare continues to be as iconic now, as it's always been. So true a fool is love that in your will, Though you do any thing, he thinks no ill. This collection of sonnets is believed to be addressed to two different persons. Save, where you are how happy you make those. Shakespeares sonnets are not given here, as they are readily available on. These themes of these sonnets are usually love, beauty, time, and jealousy to mortality and infidelity. In this collection, there are a total of 154 sonnets. While one sere leaf, that parting Autumn yields, Trembles upon the thin, and naked spray, November, dragging on this sunless day, Lours, cold and sullen, on the watery fields And Nature to the waste dominion yields, Stripped her last robes, with gold and purple gay. The You Tube also includes photos of May Sarton and of trees. It was written in the 1590s and was published in his collection of sonnets in 1609. Outstretched with benedictions o’er the land, Blessing the farms through all thy vast domain Thy shield is the red harvest moon, suspended. Here are the first two lines of Sarton’s poem: Thou standest, like imperial Charlemagne, Upon thy bridge of gold thy royal hand. Sweet Autumn crushed in wine, its fragrance so divine. I love the harvest blush that falls upon the lands the trees with ripeness flush deep red with golden strands. The poem is actually about grieving and was in the sections the prayer book for saying Kaddish, the Hebrew prayer for the dead. The Fall has its own song all pitter patter tunes as raindrops drip among a purple boon of prunes. Type in “Poem from the Autumn Sonnets”and you will hear her words on You Tube. She told me there was a You Tube reading by the author herself. I came across one of her poems that I had never read before and wrote to my friend Coll, who loves May Sarton. 'How silently they tumble down / And come to rest upon the ground / To lay a carpet, rich and rare / Beneath the trees without a care,' Brady writes at the start of the poem, about nature's decorations. In our prayer books for the Jewish Holidays there are many essays, poems, and miscellaneous writings that are not only by rabbis or Jewish poets/singers like Leonard Cohen, but also wonderful writings of well-known authors such as May Sarton. This rhyming poem about falling leaves is classroom-ready. 12/19/2023 0 Comments Vchat for mobileThe way it achieves this goal is through one of the most unsurfaced aspects of WeChat: the pioneering model of “apps within an app”. Instead of focusing on building the largest social network in the world, WeChat has focused on building a mobile lifestyle - its goal is to address every aspect of its users’ lives, including non-social ones. Philosophically, while Facebook and WhatsApp measure growth by the number of daily and monthly active users on their networks, WeChat cares more about how relevant and central WeChat is in addressing the daily, even hourly needs of its users. This is in stark contrast to Western apps, which lean towards “ app constellations”.) How WeChat works #1: The app-within-an-app model - changes everything we think we know about ‘web vs. (And while this post is not focusing on design, it is worth noting that Chinese apps tend to combine as many features as possible into one application. In WeChat’s case, chat - not other content streams or a search box - is the “universal” UI. Along with its basic communication features, WeChat users in China can access services to hail a taxi, order food delivery, buy movie tickets, play casual games, check in for a flight, send money to friends, access fitness tracker data, book a doctor appointment, get banking statements, pay the water bill, find geo-targeted coupons, recognize music, search for a book at the local library, meet strangers around you, follow celebrity news, read magazine articles, and even donate to charity … all in a single, integrated app. ĭownloading the app is free, and WeChat has only just begun to experiment with advertising revenue, so where then does its ARPU magic lie? (Especially when one remembers the difficulty of monetizing other universal, utilitarian services like email.) The short answer is that it offers more functionality. To put that in context: That’s only 150M MAUs fewer than Facebook Messenger, almost 3x the MAUs of Japan’s Line, and 10x the MAUs of Korea’s Kakao (which Tencent is also an investor in). As of earlier this year, WeChat had 549 million monthly active users (MAUs) among over one billion registered users, almost all of them in Asia. It was launched just 4 years ago by Chinese investment holding company Tencent, one of the largest internet companies in the world. Known in Chinese as Weixin (微信) - “micro letter” - WeChat is first and foremost a messaging app for sending text, voice, and photos to friends and family. How did WeChat do it? But first, some background: What is WeChat? Most notable, however, for anyone in the tech business is WeChat’s average revenue per user or ARPU, which is estimated to be at least $7 USD - that’s 7X the ARPU of WhatsApp, the largest messaging platform in the world. WeChat was not a product that started as a website and then was adapted for mobile, it was (to paraphrase a certain movie) born into it, molded by it. Ultimately, however, WeChat should matter to all of us because it shows what’s possible when an entire country - which currently has a smartphone penetration of 62% (that’s almost 1/3 of its population) - “leapfrogs” over the PC era directly to mobile. Third, WeChat shows what it’s like to be both a platform and a mobile portal (what Yahoo could have been). Second, WeChat indicates where the future of mobile commerce may lie. Many of WeChat’s most interesting features - such as access to city services - are not even visible to users outside China. So why should people outside of China even care about WeChat? The first and most obvious reason is that it points to where Facebook and other messaging apps could head. Much has been written about WeChat in the context of messaging app trends, but few outside of China really understand how it works - and how it can pull off what for many companies (and countries) is still a far-off vision of a world managed entirely through our smartphones. While seemingly just a messaging app, WeChat is actually more of a portal, a platform, and even a mobile operating system depending on how you look at it. This post is all about WeChat, but it’s also about more than just WeChat. Listen to the audio version of this article: 12/19/2023 0 Comments Shortcat eroticAt the time, any long-haired cats produced were placed into the Persian breeding program. The genes thus introduced would eventually become the basis for the British Longhair. At least partially to alleviate this, British Shorthair breeders mixed Persians into their bloodlines. īy the 1900s with the advent of the newly imported Persian and other long-haired breeds, the British Shorthair had fallen out of favour, and breeding stock had become critically rare by World War I. The new British Shorthair was featured at the first-ever cat show, organised by Weir and held at the Crystal Palace in London in 1871, and enjoyed great initial popularity. Others suggest a group of breeders may have been involved. Some sources directly credit UK artist, and pioneering cat fancier, Harrison Weir with the initial concept of standardising the breed. Selective breeding of the best examples of the type began in the nineteenth century, with emphasis on developing the unusual blue-grey variant called the "British Blue" or "English type" (to distinguish it from the more fine-boned " Russian type"). Īn early example of the "English type" Blue Shorthair, from Frances Simpson's Book of the Cat, 1903 Based on artists' representations, the modern British Shorthair is unchanged from this initial type. Over the centuries, their naturally isolated descendants developed into distinctively large, robust cats with a short but very thick coat, to better withstand conditions on their native islands. These cats then interbred with the local European wildcat population. These cats were imported by the Romans who kept them to keep the camps clear of snakes, mice and insects. The origins of the British Shorthair most likely date back to the first century AD, making it one of the most ancient identifiable cat breeds in the world. The Cat Fanciers' Association profile reads: "When gracelessness is observed, the British Shorthair is duly embarrassed, quickly recovering with a 'Cheshire cat smile'." History The breed's good-natured appearance and relatively calm temperament make it a frequent media star, notably as the inspiration for John Tenniel's famous illustration of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. A quarter of all kittens registered with the GCCF each year are British Shorthairs, making the British the most popular pedigree cat in the UK. In modern times, it remains the most popular pedigreed breed in its native country, as registered by the UK's Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF). It is one of the most ancient cat breeds known. The breed has also been developed in a wide range of other colours and patterns, including tabby and colourpoint. The most familiar colour variant is the "British Blue", with a solid grey-blue coat, orange eyes, and a medium-sized tail. The British Shorthair is the pedigreed version of the traditional British domestic cat, with a distinctively stocky body, dense coat, and broad face.
